Sonido de Luz | Christian and Cassandra Aleman
Siguatepeque, Honduras
We are Sonido de Luz – Sound of Light, in English – and it is our mission to raise up worship leaders in the Church in Honduras by providing quality music education and Christ-centered discipleship.
We are a husband and wife team! We met when Cassandra came to Honduras for a mission trip in 2023, and what could we have initially bonded over other than a love of God and talent for music? After we married in 2024 and Cassandra spent as much time as possible in Honduras, we started discussing the need for more musicians in the churches here.
Many churches will simply plug and play a CD for their worship – or, they have musicians who do their best but are at the mercy of their ability to pay for a private teacher. In addition, the Honduran school system implements music education inconsistently – it is viewed as a luxury, if the school can afford it and there are teachers willing to teach there, then it will be available. We wanted to provide a much more affordable and Christ-centered alternative to those options.
Thus this ministry, long in Christian’s heart as it was a similar experience through which he found his passion and talent for music, took root. This will be our first year and we are so excited to grow with you!
In their time with Sonido de Luz, our students will learn fundamental music theory and techniques during our weekly classes. Our course will provide much-needed opportunity for students to not only understand how to read music but also to receive personal feedback as they begin to play, which will grow them in confidence and capability.
They will learn:
- Rhythm: symbol names and counting, meter, time signatures, etc.
- Chords and Scales: all the different types, in theory and practice to utilize in their playing
- Physical techniques: how to breathe, finger placement, chord positions, etc
- Listening: recognizing intervals, chords, melodies, and rhythms by ear
- Composition: This is the final step!
They will also grow in their unique identity in Christ as we cultivate a community of worship leaders. This portion of their classes will focus on a holistic view of God’s character and walk them through discovering which of these characteristics He has created them to reflect in their own ministry.
They will explore:
- God’s nature displayed in how He interacts with His people
- The harmony of God’s character – displayed in the Trinity and the balance of His attributes: justice and mercy, humility and preeminence, judgement and love.
- Which part of God’s character THEY see reflected in their lives and OTHERS see in them
- What lies they may be believing that contradict or distract them from living those out fully
Through this work, we will equip students who feel a passion and call from the Lord to lead through music with all the tools they need to play with high quality and lead intentionally.
We work in the city and surrounding mountain communities in Siguatepeque, Honduras. While age will vary based on the population– if they desire to grow deeply in both their musical ability and spiritual understanding, we will walk in those gaps with them.
We serve in the mountain communities of San Jose de Pane and Matazano. They are only a one hour drive up the mountain on rocky clay roads by truck, but their access to resources is severely limited by those 60 minutes. Here we will work with groups beginning in a slightly younger demographic, as many will leave school and begin working between the ages of 12-14 to help their families. Our ministry will not only assist the churches here but also provide an alternative activity for the youth, who have little variation in the activities they can take part in.
We serve in the city of Siguatepeque – known for its pine trees and flower festival – where Christian is already teaching in the largest public school. Here, we will work with students 16 years old and up. We will begin this first year of ministry working church by church in the city to set them up for success; and we are excited for the future where we will have a building students from both Siguatepeque and other areas can come to learn.
We have a grand vision to grow this ministry with more locations in Honduras and Central America – to be able to take students in as individuals and families, provide them with support and jobs as needed to attend the school, and give Honduras a distinct voice that they can be proud of in Christian music.
1) Good Soil – please pray for us as we begin sowing seeds. Pray that our hearts would remain fertile soil for the vision God has planted in us. Pray for those who will participate in the ministry, that their hearts remain soft to the teachings they receive as we all walk through the hurdles the first years of ministry bring.
2) Focused Vision – please pray that all those involved would see the fruit as it comes, little by little. That none of the students would become discouraged in their musical/spiritual progress when they plateau and that we keep the immediate growth of the students at the center of our vision, making gratitude and joy our focus.
3) Transport – right now we are reliant on our friends from the New Life Project to take us to and from Pane and Matazano. While they will help us whenever they can, hitching a ride with them is not sustainable. Please pray for us as we raise the funds for a 4x4 vehicle that will last us for years to come.
4) Instruments – We begin our ministry with only our own personal instruments to offer if our students don’t have their own. Please pray for these funds as well.
5) Courage – with new opportunity comes new excitement as well as new difficulties. Please pray that we and our students will lean into these difficulties. We are believing in God to provide for all our needs, even so starting a ministry is not an easy thing. Pray Holy Spirit would cover every doubt with faith.
