We are huge proponents of intentionally setting boundaries with the people in your ministry, at your work, and in life.
One place where we often see a need for our partners to set healthy parameters and boundaries is with supporters. While most donors are wonderful, we still occasionally see individuals who think that because they give financially, they get a full say in how our partner spends the funds. Partners can feel like they are being told what they do with their time, what they believe, or even more. This attitude isn’t healthy or biblical.
Discussing your boundaries with a close partner, counselor, or mentor will guide your next steps.
It’s good to talk through the situation with someone you trust if you are struggling with this kind of overreach with a donor. You’ll need someone who can help you develop a proactive plan. When this happens, sometimes you have to be open to “breaking up” with that donor if need be. No amount of funding is worth the emotional anguish these situations can bring.
You shouldn’t feel like you have to tell your supporters about every difficult situation.
It’s wise to take time to process what’s happened before sharing it with the people who are giving to your ministry. Their gift does not entitle them to know everything happening in your life; especially if you aren’t ready to share.
For more guidance on communicating with supporters, check out our past blog post, “What to Share: How Much Sharing is Appropriate in Ministry”.
If you are at a place where what you are going through is changing the course of your ministry, then, we encourage you to share about those changes after you have spent substantial time processing them. We love openness and vulnerability, but overall, we are big proponents of taking time to process with God and your closest people. It’s important to do this before sharing a difficult issue online or with your supporters. Someone from your prayer team or Advisory Board is a great place to start!
